Why does salt melt ice?
Salt melts ice because it lowers water’s freezing point. When salt dissolves in a thin layer of liquid water on the ice surface, it forms salty water (brine). That brine freezes at a lower temperature than pure water, so ice is more likely to turn into liquid.

It’s not “melting” like heating does—it’s changing the conditions under which ice can exist.

The key concept: freezing point depression

Pure water freezes at about 0°C (at normal atmospheric pressure). When you dissolve a substance like salt in water, you make it harder for water molecules to organise into the solid ice structure.

So the temperature at which the liquid can freeze goes down. This is called freezing point depression.

But ice is solid — how does salt dissolve?

Even when it’s below 0°C, the surface of ice often has a microscopically thin layer of liquid water (and real-world ice usually has a little liquid water on it anyway). Salt lands on that layer and dissolves, forming brine.

Once brine forms, it can melt more ice, creating more liquid water, dissolving more salt, and so on.

Why salt works well for roads

  • It’s cheap and widely available.
  • It dissolves easily and forms brine that spreads.
  • It prevents re-freezing (up to a point) by lowering the freezing temperature.

Why it stops working when it’s very cold

Salt isn’t magic: it can only lower the freezing point so far.

For common road salt (sodium chloride, NaCl), effectiveness drops a lot below roughly -9°C to -10°C in practical conditions. (In theory, a strong enough brine can reach a lower freezing point, but on roads you rarely get perfect mixing or high enough concentration everywhere.)

That’s why in colder conditions, road crews may use alternatives such as:

  • Calcium chloride (works at lower temperatures and releases heat when dissolving)
  • Magnesium chloride
  • sand/grit for traction (doesn’t melt ice, but helps tyres grip)

Does sugar work too?

Yes, in principle: many dissolved substances can lower freezing point. But salt is far more practical for roads. Some places have experimented with additives (including beet-based products) to help brine stick to roads or reduce salt usage.

Downsides of salting

  • Corrosion of vehicles and infrastructure
  • Damage to plants/soil near roads
  • Increased salt in waterways
